Trade and Economic Sovereignty

Trade compatible with national resilience and fair competition — neither dependence on a single supplier nor the pretence that a country can make everything itself.

Position

Restore Europa supports international trade compatible with national economic resilience, fair competition and the preservation of strategically important productive capabilities. A country should not pursue total economic autarky where specialization and trade provide substantial benefits.

Critical dependencies should be assessed deliberately rather than discovered during a crisis, through supply-chain resilience, strategic inventories, diversified sourcing and appropriate domestic production capacity. Measures concerning trade and investment must be reviewed against the European and international obligations that apply to them.

Policy

4 commitments

  1. Assess critical dependencies in supply chains before they become strategic vulnerabilities.
  2. Hold strategic inventories and diversify sourcing for essential goods.
  3. Preserve domestic production capacity where a capability is strategically important.
  4. Review trade and investment measures against applicable European and international obligations.

Limits and unresolved details

  • Autarky is not the objective; specialization and trade are accepted where the benefit is substantial.
  • Resilience is not a general licence to shelter industry that is merely uncompetitive.

Manifesto basis

  • Economy, Property, Finance and Work

    Corporations, Industry and Competition

Large enterprises are legitimate where their scale is necessary or useful. What policy restrains is abusive dominance, not size as such.

  • Economy, Property, Finance and Work

    Economic Order

An order founded on private property, productive work and the widespread ownership of capital: distributist in ownership, corporatist in organization, subsidiary in administration.

  • Economy, Property, Finance and Work

    Work

Work has dignity but is not the purpose of human existence. Economic progress should increase security, leisure and command over one's own life.

  • Economy, Property, Finance and Work

    Private Property and Broad Ownership

Property is a source of independence and responsibility. The answer to concentration is wider ownership, not the abolition of property.
