Cryptocurrency

Lawful cryptocurrency ownership and transfer should remain permitted, while fraud, theft and abusive centralized custody remain regulated.

Position

Cryptocurrency is neither inherently liberating nor inherently illegitimate. It should be judged according to whether it serves legitimate economic purposes without producing fraud, predatory speculation or unnecessary dependence.

Policy

  • Permit lawful ownership and transfer of cryptocurrency.
  • Apply ordinary criminal law to fraud, theft, market manipulation and deceptive promotion.
  • Regulate exchanges holding customer assets proportionately for solvency, custody and anti-fraud purposes.
  • Distinguish decentralized protocols from centralized custodial businesses.
  • Do not prohibit private cryptocurrency merely to protect a monopoly for a future CBDC.
  • Use clear and administratively reasonable tax treatment.
  • Do not prohibit privacy-preserving technology merely because privacy is technically possible.

Implementation note

Implementation note

Cryptocurrency is not specifically addressed in the manifesto. This position is derived from private property, opposition to concentrated financial domination and technological subordination rather than technological prohibition.

Every question in this catalogue carries a position. Entries marked Derived follow the direction of the manifesto without their implementation being fixed, and several name the legal or treaty change they would require. Positions are revised as the movement decides; the version and date above say which text you are reading.
